Consider 310 5-minute meditation sessions across a year. Week by week, that’s less than an hour — nothing remarkable. But zoom out and the picture changes. The brain that spent 25+ hours in stillness is structurally different from one that didn’t. The cumulative area under the curve is what transforms you, not the intensity of any given session.
This reframes the right question to ask about any long-term practice. Not “how hard should I push today?” but “how long can I sustain this?” Intensity and duration trade against each other. The heroic sessions that leave you depleted don’t compound. The unremarkable ones you actually show up for do.
People routinely overestimate what a month of intense effort will produce and underestimate what a year of consistent effort will. The math favours the tortoise — not because slow is good, but because consistency is what creates accumulation. You can’t skip to the area under the curve.
